Cabot Ward Councillors

Welcome to Cabot's Councillors webpage. Here you can find information about the Councillors for Cabot ward - Mark Wright and Alex Woodman - who are both Liberal Democrats; and also the Cabot Liberal Democrat team.

Councillor Dr Mark Wright

Mark Wright

Current Position

Mark has been a Councillor since May 2005 when he was elected in council elections at the same time as the general election, and was the youngest elected Councillor for two years. He is a member of the following committees and commissions:

Mark is also the Chairman of Cabot Liberal Democrats.

Mark is the quintessential local lad. Brought up by a single mother on the South-Bristol council-estates of Hartcliffe during Thatcher's 80's, his long association with Cabot ward began at secondary school when he was educated at QEH on Brandon Hill. On leaving QEH school he went to Bristol University, studying for a degree and then for a PhD. Since obtaining his PhD he has worked in IT in the City Centre. Mark lived by the docks for 7 years, and recently moved to the other side of the ward, in Cotham. This long list of Cabot involvement means that Mark combines both youth and exuberance with the invaluable local experience of 20 years of living, schooling, learning and working inside Cabot ward.

Mark's Comment:

Cabot is an entirely unique ward in Bristol. The ward contains the modern commercial heart of the city, the old industrial docklands, the university, the night-life of the city centre, and the medieval Old Town. And wrapped around all this are thousands of Cabot residents, packed in dense residential areas. The diversity of the ward means that Cabot's residents have numerous diverse needs that must be both addressed boldly, and balanced carefully. That will be my task, and I will fight tirelessly for the residents of Cabot Ward.

Councillor Alex Woodman

Alex Woodman

Current Position

Alex Woodman was elected as a Councillor in May 2007, after the previous councillor, Anne White, decided to step down. Before that, Alex had been a local Liberal Democrat campaigner and activist. He is currently the youngest Councillor on the Council, having taken the title from Cabot colleague, Cllr Mark Wright. He is a member of the following committees and commissions:

Alex's Comment:

I moved to Bristol as a student, and loved it so much I decided to stay. I am now an advice worker and live in Redcliffe with my partner, Lucy. Professionally I help people with a variety of problems relating to issues such as housing, healthcare and benefits. Having campaigned on a lot of these issues with the Lib Dems, I decided I wanted to have a say in how Bristol is run, and to stand up for those residents who, like me, live in and around the city centre.
